  • Full time programme - once graduated from University

At Novus we pride ourselves on recruiting the highest calibre of apprentice and trainees. We are looking for individuals that are self-motivated and committed to working hard to achieve their goals. You will get a fantastic introduction to working in construction, with local on-site experience combined with further learning at a training centre or college. If you enjoy working outside and are looking for a technically challenging and physical role, a craft apprenticeship might be just the thing. Novus can offer you the opportunity to kick start your career in the construction industry through our training and apprenticeship programme, giving you the opportunity to earn money, become a master of your trade and gain an academic qualification all at the same time.

    When did you start at Novus and what position were you in?
    I began my career at Novus in June 2015 as a graduate Bid Writer. I had just finished my English Degree at University and wanted a career where I could still use my writing skills on a daily basis.
     
    What do you do at Novus today?
    I now work as a Bid Writer for the company, completing approved lists, PQQs and ITTs. I also undertake some work for the Marketing Department, helping to write content for the newsletter.
     
    How did Novus support you to get you where you are today?
    I had a lot of help when first joining the business as I was completely new to the construction industry, so had a lot to learn in a very short period of time. I carried out visits to operational offices to learn about work types and how we conduct ourselves on site. Everyone in the company was supportive and helpful.
     
    Who inspires you and why?
    There are many who inspire me, but those who are self-motivated, hardworking and dedicated inspire me to do the same.
     
    What’s your favourite memory of working for Novus?
    I was lucky enough to attend our Excellence Awards this year which highlights key individuals who go above and beyond their every day job role. The Awards emphasised all of the good work which the company does, and really inspires others to do the same.     
                                                                      
    Where would you like to go in the future?
    I would like to continue developing my skills as a Bid Writer, and hopefully gain a qualification through the company to certify my bid writing skills. One of the great things about Novus is that we are continually expanding and entering new work streams, so the possibilities for new/ developed job roles is forever expanding and emerging. I am excited to see where the company goes in the next few years, and how I can support the company in new ventures.  
     
    If you could give one bit of advice to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be?
    Always support other departments and offices in the company where you can. We can all be busy and stressed at times, but the company relies upon the support of each other to be so successful.

    When did you start at Novus and what position were you in?
    I started at Novus full time in September 2013 as Marketing Assistant, but prior to that, i did 1 day a week as work experience whilst I was at college doing my A levels.

    What do you do at Novus today?
    Marketing Co-ordinator. We do everything from events and exhibition organising, market literature, organise photography, manage internal communication, social media, and looking after the website.

    How did Novus support you to get you where you are today?
    Novus supported me through a university degree. I did Business Management with Marketing at Manchester Met. I did the course full time and was released 2 days a week to attend University.

    Who inspires you and why?
    I wouldn’t say there’s one person. I’m inspired by anyone that’s working hard to achieve their own aspirations. There are numerous people at Novus who have worked their way through the business into senior management roles.

    What’s your favourite memory of working for Novus?
    I think it would be working on the excellence awards, and seeing everyone enjoy the event.

    When did you start at Novus and what position were you in?
    Joined Novus in July 2008 as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor aged 17
     
    What do you do at Novus today?

    How did Novus support you to get you where you are today?
    Novus supported my academic studies through the following courses; BTEC National Certificate in Construction and the Built Environment, BTEC Higher National Certificate in Construction and the Built Environment and BSc (Hons) Commercial Management and Quantity Surveying. I have been mentored closely by a dedicated Managing Quantity Surveyor during my early career and a dedicated Commercial Manager as I progressed within the company.
    I have been coached through different work types within the construction industry such as: Refurbishment; Planned Maintenance, Measured Term Contracts and Responsive Maintenance. I’ve also spent a good proportion of time in different sectors such as: County Councils incl. Listed buildings; School & Education; Leisure; Hotels; Healthcare and Social Housing. I was given the opportunity early on by the Company to take responsibility of a National Contract for Whitbread Group allowing me to manage my time and responsibilities and find my own feet to push on my development. This allowed me to connect with other teams around the company which also enabled me to pull on their experiences and skills later on in my development.
    I am now responsible for the operations of the Bristol Office.
     
    Who inspires you and why?
    Seddon Family and Directors – they are role models to me. I am mentored by a Managing Director as part of my involvement in the Companies Scholarship programme. The type of support and guidance I receive could not be found anywhere else. The managers I have worked under and have been coached by have inspired me. I have learnt a lot of what they know and I can select the strongest characteristics from each of them and incorporate them into both my professional and family life. I have been lucky enough to have a close relationship with my managers and have been able to speak with them on a personal level. 

    What’s your favourite memory of working for Novus?
    Having a special mention at the companies Excellence Awards in 2014 which motivated me to work harder
                                                                               
    Where would you like to go in the future?
    I would like to establish myself as a Senior Manager and ultimately a Board level position. I will be striving to become Managing Director of Novus. I would like to drive the company forward to be the industry leader along-side my peers that are also working towards the same end goal as me.
     
    If you could give one bit of advice to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be?
    Be yourself. Bring to the table your strengths and opinions as they could never be wrong, they will only add more depth or another dynamic to a discussion of decision and you won’t be penalised for doing so. Don’t try to be someone you’re not and don’t be a people pleaser.
    Work hard to achieve what you want to achieve and no one will stop you from developing they will only assist and support. What you invest into the company, the company will invest back into you

    When did you start at Novus and what position were you in?
    About 15 years ago as an administrator for the then Nottingham Office

    How did Novus support you to get you where you are today?
    I started at Novus at a young age and felt that they supported and guided me to develop a customer service department.  I learned to listen to other people as well as myself.

    Who inspires you and why?
    Our management team inspires me to stretch my capabilities and try to achieve as much as possible as they came from site level as well.  

    What’s your favourite memory of working for Novus?
    Carrying out one of my first contract presentations (to win work) and finding out we had won the contract.

    Where would you like to go in the future?
    Just keep progressing and growing the team to offer more customer support.

    If you could give one bit of advice to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be?
    You need to be flexible and amenable and always go that one step further to help your colleagues/clients/managers. A saying that we have is “people work with people”, clients renew their contracts with us as they like working with us as people.

    How did Novus support you to get you where you are today?
    I could not have got where I am today without the help and support of my colleagues, senior management and directors.  The assistance and encouragement provided at all levels is without doubt the key to my success with Novus.  The door is always “open” and the family ethos filters throughout the regional offices, with everyone being obliging and helpful as, afterall, we are all aiming for the same goal.
     
    Who inspires you and why?  (I hate questions like this!!)
    I’ve never really been consumed to want to imitate someone else; there are lots of inspirational characters however I get my inspiration from wanting to be successful; to make the company proud and be recognised for my efforts.  
     
    What’s your favourite memory of working for Novus?
    Ha ha, plenty, especially when I had only been with the company a few weeks and I asked our Chairman, Stuart Seddon, for ID as he wanted to look at our new computer system – one way not to be forgotten!
     
    If you could give one bit of advice to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be?
    Don’t be afraid to ask, there is a huge amount of invaluable knowledge and experience within Novus.  Learn as much as you can about the business, we are diverse, unique and have a lot to offer to both employees and clients alike.

    When did you start at Novus and what position were you in?
    29/04/1984 on a 12 month youth training scheme as a painter and decorator.
     
    What do you do at Novus today?
    Strategic operations manager for the North West.
     
    How did Novus support you to get you where you are today?
    I have been very fortunate in my 30 years to have only had 3 direct line managers. Their mentoring and support (also from the board of directors) to try new ways of working and the training I have received have all contributed to my success along with the support from my staff.
     
    Who inspires you and why?
    There is no 1 person. I have been fortunate enough to work with line managers that have allowed me to express my views and given me the free reign to a certain degree to try new methods and ways of working.
     
    What’s your favourite memory of working for Novus?
    Without doubt the camaraderie and support throughout my 30 plus years with Novus.
     
    Where would you like to go in the future?
    If I was a bit younger MD.
     
    If you could give one bit of advice to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be?
    My one piece of advice would be; Lead by example and don’t be afraid to try new things and make a mistake. Not everything will work but you should gain huge amounts of experience from it. That in its self makes it worthwhile.

    When did you start at Novus and what position were you in?
    I began my employment with Novus in June 2013 and was originally brought in as an office admin to generally help out with the day to day administration jobs for Whitbread Maintenance and any other bits and bobs for the refurbishment side.
     
    What do you do at Novus today?
    Today I am a Quantity Surveyor working on the Whitbread Refurbishment programme which provides me with the opportunity to expand my knowledge within the work that gets carried out onsite and also provides me with the flexibility to travel around the country to look at ongoing sites and meet with clients to further my development.
     
    How did Novus support you to get you where you are today?
    Novus have provided much support in helping me to get to the position that I am today. As they saw potential in my ability they offered me the chance to go college part time once a week to further my skills and knowledge within the industry. Novus kindly insisted that they would pay for my education and also provide me with expenses to cover the cost of travelling and provided me with all the equipment that was required. – Because of this opportunity it has broadened the knowledge I have within the industry enabling me to progress further within my role as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor.
     
    Who inspires you and why?
    Many people inspire me and help me better myself day in and day out however if there was one person who I would have to identify as my inspiration it would be my mother. Her work ethic, quality of work and determination to do the best job possible inspire me to strive on and achieve further within the business. When I first started working for Novus I was struggling to settle into the role and wasn’t giving 100% so my mother took me outside the office and explained to me how lucky I am to be given the opportunity that I have and that I needed to show a massive improvement in my quality of work and since that conversation I do whatever it takes to ensure my responsibilities are taken care of to the best of my ability. If it wasn’t for that short conversation I don’t believe I would be in the position I am now.
     
    What’s your favourite memory of working for Novus?
    My favourite memory of working for Novus would probably be when I was first handed over the Reactive Maintenance contracts as it was a sense of achievement and responsibility that I had never experienced before.
     
    Where would you like to go in the future?
    In the future I would like to see myself in a more senior role within the business. Of course the aim for most employees would be to become a director for the business and I also share that same aim however you can only take each day as it comes.
     
    If you could give one bit of advice to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be?
    My advice would be to show that you are willing and determined to get the best for the company and to enhance your knowledge for not only your own benefit but to the company’s strengths. Once you show the determination and ability to drive the company forward many more doors open within the business to provide you with new opportunities.

    When did you start working for Novus and what position were you in?
    I Started working for Novus in October 2013 as a 1st-year Apprentice Painter and Decorator. 

    What do you do at Novus today? 
    I am now serving my third year for Novus currently working full time, whilst waiting to begin my level 3 NVQ diploma at Wirrel MET college. 

    How do Novus support you to get where you are today? 
    I have been lucky enough to have been selected by the training department for many competitions and events which have helped me both practically and mentally. The courses that I have attended (CSCS, asbestos awareness, ladder safety etc) because of Novus are a major contributing factor of the knowledge I have now gained within the construction industry. I would like to also thank my managers for being a big contributor of how far my practical skills and knowledge of the job have come along in the past two years, as they are the people I work with on a daily basis. If I have ever had any problems/queries I know that I can ask anyone around me and they are always willing to help. 

    Who inspires you and why? 
    It would be extremely difficult to pick one person in my life that has ultimately inspired me to be the person I am today and what I would like to be in the future. However, within the company my operations manager Mike Demattia is definitely a person I look up to and respect for his hard work and dedication that he has given and continues to give to the company. 

    Whats your favourite memory of working for Novus? 
    I think that my favourite memory of working for Novus would have to be the trip to Holland for the Uniep event. I gained a great sense of achievement after painting the school for autistic children. It was also interesting to visit the AkzoNoble factory where we were taught about the science of colour and paint, whilst also testing new products. It was a privilege to attend the event. I don't think many other companies would go as far to provide new opportunities for their employees as Novus do. 

    Where would you like to go in the future? 
    I'm currently enjoying what I do on a day to day basis. However, i am looking to further my career in the future. Due to the vast opportunities, Novus has to offer I am yet to decide the exact path I want to take, other than the fact I am certain it will be withNovus. I am always grateful for any new courses, training and opportunities that come my way and always will be. 

    If you could give one bit of information to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be? 
    To be successful at Novus I believe you need to put your all into everything you do on a daily basis. Maintaining high standards of work at all times. Be friendly and respectful to both clients and colleagues. Apply basic common sense and things you have learnt throughout your career. But most of all, do whatever you can to go that extra mile. Nobody is perfect, but if you try your hardest to be successful, I'm sure that your efforts will be recognised.

    I started on the company in the year 2004 as an apprentice painter and decorator.

    Novus have supported me throughout my career by recognising my potential and providing me the opportunity and training needed to progress the way I wanted to within the company.
     
    Who inspires you and why? 
    The company Managing Directors inspire me because they too started as trainees in the company and with hard work were able to progress and succeed.
     
    What’s your favourite memory of working for Novus? 
    My favourite memory to date was winning the company apprentice of the year, and also winning the prize of being the best apprentice in the country.
     
    Where would you like to go in the future?
    I would like to aim for a senior management or directory role.
     
    If you could give one bit of advice to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be?
    I would advise someone to persevere when times are busy and always work hard and give your best.  Listen to your peers and always be open to a challenge.

    When did you start at Novus and what position were you in?
    I started as an apprentice painter in Oct 2007 working for the Burton office. I then transferred to Stoke painting after 6 months. I became a full time painter for a few years after my apprenticeship and was a site supervisor for a year or so after that.

    What do you do at Novus today?
    I am currently a trainee estimator and have been for the past year.

    How did Novus support you to get you where you are today?
    Novus supported me from day one. They transferred me within 6 months to accommodate for my needs. Arranged for me to attend college to gain my NVQ 3 in painting. Took me off site to train in house and better my skills. Arranged for me to enter painting competitions to see how I would fend against other trades people. Then after a couple of years’ experience on site I applied to take part in their scholarship programme. Since then I became a site supervisor and got a lot of relevant training. Started to attend days and then weeks in an office environment which finally led to me starting as a trainee estimator. I am now completing my HNC in construction and plan to start my quantity surveying degree in Sept 2016.

    Who inspires you and why?
    If I’m honest I am inspired by my father and grandfather. They have always been hard workers and that has become instilled in me. If you want something then go get it, but work for it.

    What’s your favourite memory of working for Novus?
    Personally I have loads. I always enjoyed the thrill of working from cherry pickers, cradles and scaffolding as they take you high and made each job unique. A lot of this work took place in Manchester and I can remember being above the buildings and looking across the city skyline.
    More recently I have been excited by all of the new skills I am learning and this year has been a memorable one. Winning a job that I helped price or measure has become my new thrill.
    The co-workers and staff have contributed to all of the good memories I have whilst working with Novus.

    Where would you like to go in the future?
    I would love to continue on my path with Novus. As the company continues to grow I would like to grow with it. The next step for me is to gain experience as an estimator. But in the future I would like to be a key part of the company. I would like to be able to win valuable work and help direct the company towards profitable work.

    If you could give one bit of advice to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be?
    I would say “if you work hard you will get noticed, just be honest and be yourself”.

    Started with Novus June 2008 as a Trainee QS

    What do you do at Novus today?
    Current role – Quantity Surveyor

    How did Novus support you to get you where you are today?
    Novus have supported me by funding my education as a Quantity Surveyor. I have completed a NC in Building, Architecture & Quantity Surveying, HNC Quantity Surveying and Bsc Hons Degree in Quantity Surveying.
    This was completed on a day release basis concurrently with my daily professional duties. Development both educationally and professionally has allowed me to develop along with the business and grow into a position of Quantity Surveyor.

    Who inspires you and why?
    The current directors at Novus are an example of what can be achieved at this company. Most have worked within the business for a long period of time, coming through the ranks to lead the business. This example shows myself & my colleagues what can be achieved.

    What’s your favourite memory of working for Novus?
    Being part of the scholarship programme has provided many memories both in & out of the work place. The programme has offered me and other colleagues the opportunity to learn about other departments within the business. In addition, we have also raised a substantial amount of money for charity by undertaking various physical challenges. Completing the coast-to-coast cycle challenge provided a great sense of achievement, and was only possible by being part of the Novus scholarship team.

    Where would you like to go in the future?
    The example the directors have set shows there is no limit to achieving success when you apply yourself correctly.

    If you could give one bit of advice to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be?
    The opportunities for career progression are clear at Novus, if you are motivated & apply yourself correctly then they will invest in your future & offer you the chance to grow with the business.

    Just keep progressing and growing the team to offer more customer support.

    If you could give one bit of advice to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be?
    You need to be flexible and amenable and always go that one step further to help your colleagues/clients/managers. A saying that we have is “people work with people”, clients renew their contracts with us as they like working with us as people.

    How did Novus support you to get you where you are today?
    I could not have got where I am today without the help and support of my colleagues, senior management and directors.  The assistance and encouragement provided at all levels is without doubt the key to my success with Novus.  The door is always “open” and the family ethos filters throughout the regional offices, with everyone being obliging and helpful as, afterall, we are all aiming for the same goal.
     
    Who inspires you and why?  (I hate questions like this!!)
    I’ve never really been consumed to want to imitate someone else; there are lots of inspirational characters however I get my inspiration from wanting to be successful; to make the company proud and be recognised for my efforts.  
     
    What’s your favourite memory of working for Novus?
    Ha ha, plenty, especially when I had only been with the company a few weeks and I asked our Chairman, Stuart Seddon, for ID as he wanted to look at our new computer system – one way not to be forgotten!
     
    If you could give one bit of advice to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be?
    Don’t be afraid to ask, there is a huge amount of invaluable knowledge and experience within Novus.  Learn as much as you can about the business, we are diverse, unique and have a lot to offer to both employees and clients alike. 

  • Steve Colclough - Strategic Operations Manager
    When did you start at Novus and what position were you in?
    29/04/1984 on a 12 month youth training scheme as a painter and decorator.
     
    What do you do at Novus today?
    Strategic operations manager for the North West.
     
    How did Novus support you to get you where you are today?
    I have been very fortunate in my 30 years to have only had 3 direct line managers. Their mentoring and support (also from the board of directors) to try new ways of working and the training I have received have all contributed to my success along with the support from my staff.
     
    Who inspires you and why?
    There is no 1 person. I have been fortunate enough to work with line managers that have allowed me to express my views and given me the free reign to a certain degree to try new methods and ways of working.
     
    What’s your favourite memory of working for Novus?
    Without doubt the camaraderie and support throughout my 30 plus years with Novus.
     
    Where would you like to go in the future?
    If I was a bit younger MD.
     
    If you could give one bit of advice to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be?
    My one piece of advice would be; Lead by example and don’t be afraid to try new things and make a mistake. Not everything will work but you should gain huge amounts of experience from it. That in its self makes it worthwhile.
     

  • Liam Hebblethwaite - Quantity Surveyor
    When did you start at Novus and what position were you in?
    I began my employment with Novus in June 2013 and was originally brought in as an office admin to generally help out with the day to day administration jobs for Whitbread Maintenance and any other bits and bobs for the refurbishment side.
     
    What do you do at Novus today?
    Today I am a Quantity Surveyor working on the Whitbread Refurbishment programme which provides me with the opportunity to expand my knowledge within the work that gets carried out onsite and also provides me with the flexibility to travel around the country to look at ongoing sites and meet with clients to further my development.
     
    How did Novus support you to get you where you are today?
    Novus have provided much support in helping me to get to the position that I am today. As they saw potential in my ability they offered me the chance to go college part time once a week to further my skills and knowledge within the industry. Novus kindly insisted that they would pay for my education and also provide me with expenses to cover the cost of travelling and provided me with all the equipment that was required. – Because of this opportunity it has broadened the knowledge I have within the industry enabling me to progress further within my role as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor.
     
    Who inspires you and why?
    Many people inspire me and help me better myself day in and day out however if there was one person who I would have to identify as my inspiration it would be my mother. Her work ethic, quality of work and determination to do the best job possible inspire me to strive on and achieve further within the business. When I first started working for Novus I was struggling to settle into the role and wasn’t giving 100% so my mother took me outside the office and explained to me how lucky I am to be given the opportunity that I have and that I needed to show a massive improvement in my quality of work and since that conversation I do whatever it takes to ensure my responsibilities are taken care of to the best of my ability. If it wasn’t for that short conversation I don’t believe I would be in the position I am now.
     
    What’s your favourite memory of working for Novus?
    My favourite memory of working for Novus would probably be when I was first handed over the Reactive Maintenance contracts as it was a sense of achievement and responsibility that I had never experienced before.
     
    Where would you like to go in the future?
    In the future I would like to see myself in a more senior role within the business. Of course the aim for most employees would be to become a director for the business and I also share that same aim however you can only take each day as it comes.
     
    If you could give one bit of advice to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be?
    My advice would be to show that you are willing and determined to get the best for the company and to enhance your knowledge for not only your own benefit but to the company’s strengths. Once you show the determination and ability to drive the company forward many more doors open within the business to provide you with new opportunities.

  • James Riley - Apprentice
    When did you start working for Novus and what position were you in?
    I Started working for Novus in October 2013 as a 1st-year Apprentice Painter and Decorator. 

    What do you do at Novus today? 
    I am now serving my third year for Novus currently working full time, whilst waiting to begin my level 3 NVQ diploma at Wirrel MET college. 

    How do Novus support you to get where you are today? 
    I have been lucky enough to have been selected by the training department for many competitions and events which have helped me both practically and mentally. The courses that I have attended (CSCS, asbestos awareness, ladder safety etc) because of Novus are a major contributing factor of the knowledge I have now gained within the construction industry. I would like to also thank my managers for being a big contributor of how far my practical skills and knowledge of the job have come along in the past two years, as they are the people I work with on a daily basis. If I have ever had any problems/queries I know that I can ask anyone around me and they are always willing to help. 

    Who inspires you and why? 
    It would be extremely difficult to pick one person in my life that has ultimately inspired me to be the person I am today and what I would like to be in the future. However, within the company my operations manager Mike Demattia is definitely a person I look up to and respect for his hard work and dedication that he has given and continues to give to the company. 

    Whats your favourite memory of working for Novus? 
    I think that my favourite memory of working for Novus would have to be the trip to Holland for the Uniep event. I gained a great sense of achievement after painting the school for autistic children. It was also interesting to visit the AkzoNoble factory where we were taught about the science of colour and paint, whilst also testing new products. It was a privilege to attend the event. I don't think many other companies would go as far to provide new opportunities for their employees as Novus do. 

    Where would you like to go in the future? 
    I'm currently enjoying what I do on a day to day basis. However, i am looking to further my career in the future. Due to the vast opportunities, Novus has to offer I am yet to decide the exact path I want to take, other than the fact I am certain it will be withNovus. I am always grateful for any new courses, training and opportunities that come my way and always will be. 

    If you could give one bit of information to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be? 
    To be successful at Novus I believe you need to put your all into everything you do on a daily basis. Maintaining high standards of work at all times. Be friendly and respectful to both clients and colleagues. Apply basic common sense and things you have learnt throughout your career. But most of all, do whatever you can to go that extra mile. Nobody is perfect, but if you try your hardest to be successful, I'm sure that your efforts will be recognised. 
  • James Philips - Contracts Agent
    When did you start at Novus and what position were you in? 
    I started on the company in the year 2004 as an apprentice painter and decorator.
     
    What do you do at Novus today? 
    I am now a contracts Agent
     
    How did Novus support you to get you where you are today? 
    Novus have supported me throughout my career by recognising my potential and providing me the opportunity and training needed to progress the way I wanted to within the company.
     
    Who inspires you and why? 
    The company Managing Directors inspire me because they too started as trainees in the company and with hard work were able to progress and succeed.
     
    What’s your favourite memory of working for Novus? 
    My favourite memory to date was winning the company apprentice of the year, and also winning the prize of being the best apprentice in the country.
     
    Where would you like to go in the future?
    I would like to aim for a senior management or directory role.
     
    If you could give one bit of advice to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be?
    I would advise someone to persevere when times are busy and always work hard and give your best.  Listen to your peers and always be open to a challenge. 

  • Craig Martin - Trainee Estimator
    When did you start at Novus and what position were you in?
    I started as an apprentice painter in Oct 2007 working for the Burton office. I then transferred to Stoke painting after 6 months. I became a full time painter for a few years after my apprenticeship and was a site supervisor for a year or so after that.

    What do you do at Novus today?
    I am currently a trainee estimator and have been for the past year.

    How did Novus support you to get you where you are today?
    Novus supported me from day one. They transferred me within 6 months to accommodate for my needs. Arranged for me to attend college to gain my NVQ 3 in painting. Took me off site to train in house and better my skills. Arranged for me to enter painting competitions to see how I would fend against other trades people. Then after a couple of years’ experience on site I applied to take part in their scholarship programme. Since then I became a site supervisor and got a lot of relevant training. Started to attend days and then weeks in an office environment which finally led to me starting as a trainee estimator. I am now completing my HNC in construction and plan to start my quantity surveying degree in Sept 2016.

    Who inspires you and why?
    If I’m honest I am inspired by my father and grandfather. They have always been hard workers and that has become instilled in me. If you want something then go get it, but work for it.

    What’s your favourite memory of working for Novus?
    Personally I have loads. I always enjoyed the thrill of working from cherry pickers, cradles and scaffolding as they take you high and made each job unique. A lot of this work took place in Manchester and I can remember being above the buildings and looking across the city skyline.
    More recently I have been excited by all of the new skills I am learning and this year has been a memorable one. Winning a job that I helped price or measure has become my new thrill.
    The co-workers and staff have contributed to all of the good memories I have whilst working with Novus.

    Where would you like to go in the future?
    I would love to continue on my path with Novus. As the company continues to grow I would like to grow with it. The next step for me is to gain experience as an estimator. But in the future I would like to be a key part of the company. I would like to be able to win valuable work and help direct the company towards profitable work.

    If you could give one bit of advice to someone who wants to be successful at Novus what would it be?
    I would say “if you work hard you will get noticed, just be honest and be yourself”.

  • Chris Meechan - Quantity Surveyor

    Started with Novus June 2008 as a Trainee QS

    What do you do at Novus today?
    Current role – Quantity Surveyor

    How did Novus support you to get you where you are today?
    Novus have supported me by funding my education as a Quantity Surveyor. I have completed a NC in Building, Architecture & Quantity Surveying, HNC Quantity Surveying and Bsc Hons Degree in Quantity Surveying.
    This was completed on a day release basis concurrently with my daily professional duties. Development both educationally and professionally has allowed me to develop along with the business and grow into a position of Quantity Surveyor.

    Who inspires you and why?
    The current directors at Novus are an example of what can be achieved at this company. Most have worked within the business for a long period of time, coming through the ranks to lead the business. This example shows myself & my colleagues what can be achieved.

    What’s your favourite memory of working for Novus?
    Being part of the scholarship programme has provided many memories both in & out of the work place. The programme has offered me and other colleagues the opportunity to learn about other departments within the business. In addition, we have also raised a substantial amount of money for charity by undertaking various physical challenges. Completing the coast-to-coast cycle challenge provided a great sense of achievement, and was only possible by being part of the Novus scholarship team.

    Where would you like to go in the future?
    The example the directors have set shows there is no limit to achieving success when you apply yourself correctly.

    The opportunities for career progression are clear at Novus, if you are motivated & apply yourself correctly then they will invest in your future & offer you the chance to grow with the business.
