A Trainee Quantity Surveyor’s journey from attending a career talk to gaining employment

A Trainee Quantity Surveyor’s journey from attending a career talk to gaining employment
Novus are dedicated to educating students through our social value initiatives to help them to gain the necessary skills for employment.  In collaboration with our long-term partners, Business in the Community and Thistley Hough Academy, we have touched many students’ lives with our inspiring stories of routes into the workplace and the paths that those careers have taken resulting in achievement.

Changing Perceptions

Cameron took part in many of the activities Novus held with Thistley Hough, which included mentoring by our employees whilst completing his studies.  His interest in construction ignited when we delivered a ‘changing perceptions’ talk about what Novus do and the construction industries impact on the wider world.

Industry Requirements

Cameron came to realise that many of the jobs in the industry required skills in his favorite subjects, which encouraged him to carry on his mathematics studies at college.  He identified Quantity Surveying as an area of interest, in the knowledge that companies such as Novus are encouraging young people to enter the industry through this route.  This didn’t work out as planned straight away for Cameron and he went to work for a local company in a business admin role but quickly realised that this wasn’t the role for him.

During this time, Cameron saw an advertisement on Novus’ website for a ‘Trainee Quantity Surveyor’ based at our Head Office in Stoke.

Novus Job Offer

Cameron knew Novus from his time at Thistley Hough and recognised straight away that this would be a perfect opportunity for him with a local employer with a strong reputation for investing and developing young people.  Novus were impressed with Cameron’s maths skills and the manner in which he presented himself in his interviews and ultimately offered him the job.  Cameron felt prepared after the mentoring he received from Andy Woodhouse, Strategic Operations Manager (who himself joined Novus over 30 years ago as an Apprentice Painter).

Cameron’s Thoughts

Cameron said “I have always wanted to work for Novus, after being part of the mentor program at school, I had always found the company to be professional and all the staff members I had spoken to were all very positive about their experience working for Novus. I couldn’t pass the opportunity to work for such a great local company”
